Chile 0-0 England (1984)
Looking back 30 years this month to England's 0-0 draw away to Chile in June 1984. The match marks the last match of England's South American tour at the end of the 1983/84 season, having famously beaten Brazil 2-0 a week earlier before losing 2-0 to Uruguay. The match against Chile sees England create the majority of chances, with captain Bryan Robson giving a typically ferocious performance, but they are unable to break the deadlock.

England qualify for Euro 92 - just! - after a late Gary Lineker goal earns them a draw away to Poland in November 1991. In a very tight qualifying group, England go into the match needing a draw to qualify but know defeat will put them out with both the Republic of Ireland and Poland breathing down their necks. Good fortune is on their side as the Poles have a strong penalty shout turned down m...

Includes a run through of the two teams and the thoughts of BBC pundits Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Hill and Lawrie McMenamy with David Coleman - despite the confidence of the panel United would win it, Brighton would famously almost win ...
Netherlands 2-0 England (1993) WCQ

England's World Cup qualification hopes are dealt a shattering blow as they lose 2-0 away to Holland in October 1993. In what is effectively a winner takes all clash, Graham Taylor is left furious with the referee over his failure to send off Ronald Koeman for hauling down a goalbound David Platt - Koeman going on to put the Dutch ahead before Dennis Bergkamp settles it. Earlier Holland's Frank...

Despite taking the lead through a tremendous Graeme Le Saux goal, England are beaten 3-1 at Wembley by Brazil in June 1995 as emerging talents such as Ronaldo and Juninho shine. The result means the World Cup holders lift the Umbro Cup, which Sweden and Japan also contested, and condemns Terry Venables to his only defeat from open play in charge of England (although they had been losing away to...

England's first meeting with Nigeria is an entertaining friendly at Wembley in November 1994. The visitors impress with their skill but the match is decided in England's favour by a goal from David Platt, on a night when midfield colleague Dennis Wise gives arguably his best international performance and central defenders Neil Ruddock and Steve Howey make their debuts. Includes some post-match ...

England 0-0 Colombia (1995)

No goals but plenty of entertainment as Colombia visit Wembley for a friendly in September 1995. The match is forever remembered for visiting goalkeeper Rene Higuita's 'scorpion kick' save, as the Colombians (like on their previous visit in 1988) entertain the small crowd with their style of football. England put on a good attacking display despite not scoring, hitting the woodwork three times....

What a game. I always thought Lato would be dangerous while watching this game as a 13 year old, Shilton was at fault for the goal, a great break with pace and clever run from Dormarsk...Ramsay was stuck in qith his favourites , should have bought on Kevin Hecotor for Chivers who did nothing in the game earlier.

Robson made the mistake of taking Hately over Dixon, when Dixon had been the leading goalscorer in division One in both 85 and 86. Unfortunately for Dixon, was his stomach injury caused during the FA cup match in nJanuary 86 against Liverpool. Took him the rest of the season to recover, and sadly, never quite the same player after.

The more you look at Wright and Ferdinand and a few more of the England players of the time, they just weren't international standard, regardless of what they say now. Wright insinuated that the reason he wasn't picked was due to racism, but truth was, he wasn't as good as he thought he was. Wright scored something like 9 goals for England. 4 of them came against San Marino. He was ok but not a world beater. Same with Ferdinand who struggled against Norway in Oslo. That's not Brazil in Rio or Germany in Munich. That's Norway in Oslo. If you can't cut the Norwegians up like ribbons then what hope is there for you as an international player? Taylor was beset with that sort of standard of player; Gazza, Ince and Platt were good players but they alone weren't enough to get the side to the finals.

I can't help but feel that Taylor had a lot of bad luck as England manager. In this game for example - Ian Wright was pretty much at his peak, yet he missed a hattrick of chances. And how on earth did Woods not get to the ball before Lalas? And all of this pales into comparison with the Holland game...
